Spongy Cakes, Chewy Boba Vibez, and a Shocking Durian Finale! | American Chris in the Philippines

Welcome back to another edition of the Thai Snack Review series here at ThaiSnackOnline.com!

If you’ve ever walked into a Big C supermarket in Bangkok, you already know the overwhelming feeling: aisles upon aisles of colorful packaging, unique flavor combinations, and Thai snacks you simply can’t find anywhere else.

Recently, the popular travel vloggers American Chris in the Philippines and his partner took a trip to Bangkok and brought back a literal shopping cart full of pasalubong — souvenir treats from Thailand.

They sat down to taste-test some of the most popular sweet treats in Thailand right now. From viral TikTok trends to classic local staples, let’s dive into what’s worth your money — and what you might want to skip.

🍰 The Euro Cake Face-Off: Which Flavor Reigns Supreme?

Euro Cakes are a staple of Thai convenience stores. If you’ve never had one, think of them as the Southeast Asian cousin of the Twinkie — a beautifully soft, spongy cake filled with various fruit and cream fillings.

Chris and his partner tried three flavors, and the results might surprise you.

1. Melon Flavor — Score: 7.5/10Right out of the wrapper, this one hits you with a powerful, sweet cantaloupe aroma. The inside features a vibrant orange jelly filling. It’s incredibly soft and sweet, tasting just like melon candy.

2. Banana Flavor — Score: 8/10The banana Euro Cake smells amazing the second it’s opened. What makes this one stand out is that even if you take a bite without the filling, the sponge cake itself is deeply infused with a sweet, mashed-banana flavor. It’s a massive hit for banana lovers.

3. Coconut Flavor — Score: 9/10The Champion! Delivering a perfect balance, the coconut Euro Cake features a lush, yellow cream filling with a subtle, authentic coconut taste. The couple noted that this is the absolute perfect companion for a morning cup of coffee or hot chocolate.

🧋 The Gummy & Chewy Candies: Boba Textures

Next up was a selection of chewy candies that mimic the texture of boba pearls. If you love a snack with a satisfying pull, these are for you

Mango Chewy Gummy:This candy packs a great, authentic mango flavor with a super-chewy, boba-like consistency. Plus, at around 100 pesos for a massive 100-piece bag, it’s an absolute steal for budget snackers.

Thai Milk Tea Candy:Milk tea is a cultural phenomenon in Thailand, and this candy nails it. It smells and tastes exactly like a freshly brewed cup of sweet Thai milk tea, combining that classic beverage flavor with a fun, chewy bite.

Durian Chewy Candy:Durian is always the wild card. While the packaging did an excellent job of trapping the notoriously pungent aroma inside, the flavor itself is intense. It starts sweet and sugary, but as you chew, the deep, unmistakable taste of durian takes over. If you love the “King of Fruits,” you’ll love this; if not, consider yourself warned!

🧇 The Wafers & Cream Cakes

Orange vs. Coconut WafersWhen it came to the individual wafer packs, Orange walked away with a clear victory, scoring up to 7.9/10. It features a punchy, nostalgia-inducing “fake orange” flavor similar to Sunny Delight or an orange Oreo.

The Coconut Wafer, on the other hand, fell a bit flat with a weaker flavor profile, earning a modest 6/10.

Pandan Ellse Cake — Score: 6/10Pandan is a beloved flavor in Thailand, but the Ellse brand cake didn’t quite live up to the hype. While the bright green color and white cream look appetizing, the couple found the cake itself to be on the dry side.

Pro tip: If you try this one, make sure you have a glass of water nearby!

🍫 The Viral TikTok Super-Star: Milo Nuggets

Milo, a malted chocolate powder, is wildly popular across Southeast Asia, and these Milo Nuggets came heavily recommended by TikTok.

For Western snackers, Chris compared them to a darker chocolate version of an American Malted Milk Ball. They feature a smooth chocolate coating on the outside, but when you bite into them, you’re met with a dense, intensely flavorful, powdery Milo center. They are crunchy, chocolatey, and highly addictive.

🏆 The Ultimate Verdict

Overall, Thailand’s sweet snack game proved to be incredibly strong. Out of the entire haul, every single snack scored in the 6 to 9 out of 10 range, proving that you can rarely go wrong when browsing a Thai snack aisle.

If you are putting together your next Thai snack order, make sure to prioritize the Coconut Euro Cakes, Milo Nuggets, and Thai Milk Tea Gummies for the ultimate Bangkok flavor experience!
